[Summary of the Winchester family history. Contains spoilers for most of the show (up through season two, and In the Beginning/The Song Remains the Same).] The Winchester Family Curse: Mary Campbell, raised into a family of hunters, raised to kill monsters, meets John Winchester, a man oblivious to the supernatural. Mary swears off hunting in order to marry John and start a family. Azazel, a powerful demon, has a plan to unleash Hell on the world, and to do that he needs an army. Azazel kills both of Mary's parents, and John. Mary, heartbroken, just wants John back, and her family, so she makes a deal with Azazel: if she allows him to come into her home and take something from her in ten years, he will bring John back to life. She accepts. Ten years from then, Mary and John have two children: four year old Dean and six month old Sam. One night, Mary goes to check on Sam in his nursery and finds a figure standing over him. It's Azazel. Azazel kills Mary, burning her on the ceiling while John watches. Sam, Dean, and John survive, but John has now been exposed to the world of the supernatural, and, motivated by revenge, has resolved to find and kill the demon that murdered Mary. Driven by this goal, John leads his sons around the country, hunting monsters, ghosts, and demons. Azazel continues to wreak havoc on the lives of the Winchester men: after Dean is seriously hurt in a car accident, John makes a deal with the demon, trading his life for his son's. The cycle continues. The Winchester curse remains intact while their lives fall apart.

Freedom Hangs Like Heaven - Iron and Wine
Mary, carry your babe, bound up tight like lips around a whimper. Your fingers over my face - blind eyed Samson driven to the temple. Mary, carry your shame well past all those eyes across the avenue. Fish heads running from rain; you know i'll do anything you want me to. Lamp oil lovers may say, "freedom hangs like heaven over everyone." Ain't nobody knows what the newborn holds, but his papa's going to hide shaking gristle and shaking like bone.
Mary, carry my name; hoof marks hacked up all i had to offer you. Looked all over this place, lost your portrait lately when the winter blew. In like herod and them; freedom hangs like heaven over everyone. Ain't nobody knows what the newborn holds, but a dollar says he'll lick that devil and do it alone.
Begin Again - The Veils
It's the road you laid that made you blind. It's just a hollow name we'll leave behind.

We're all just following the light of long dead stars.
Good-Bye - Mary Gauthier
I'd love to stay now, but I don't know how; hold me, baby, till I'm gone again.
So I move through like thunder, I push through like rain, pushing out from under. Good-bye could've been my family name.
